To You, Meeting Siheung for the First Time

When looking for a quick getaway near Seoul, Siheung, home to 500,000 residents, makes a wonderful choice. Expecting only towering concrete buildings, I was instead greeted by vast tidal flats and cozy mountains just a short drive away. It's the perfect spot for weekend travelers seeking relaxation away from the bustling city center.

Time Carved Out by the Sea and Tidal Flats

Siheung has long been a settlement where people gathered, living alongside the sea and tidal flats. Visiting Oido clearly reveals the history of how this former island was connected to the mainland through reclamation projects. From ports steeped in the lives of fishermen to ancient temples nestled beneath Soraesan Mountain, traces of humans and nature living in harmony over a long time are deeply embedded in every corner.

New Scenery at Every Step: Must-Visit Places

Because the sea and forest coexist in Siheung, it's easy to plan a diverse itinerary for just a single day. The fresh air while walking along the boardwalks over tidal flats or cozy temples is still so vivid in my memory.

Essential Tips Before Setting Off

Siheung has a well-connected metropolitan subway system (Seohae Line, Line 4), making it worth a try even for car-free travelers. However, since the attractions are quite widely spread out, planning your route efficiently is key. In particular, to catch the Oido sunset, arriving 1 hour before sunset is highly recommended!
