A Gwangju Travel Walking Along Green Forest Paths and Traces of Joseon White Porcelain
Just an hour's drive away from busy Seoul, fill your leisure time in Gwangju, where profound history and open lakes await you.
A calming comma for your mind, let me introduce Gwangju
Gwangju in Gyeonggi-do is a wonderful place for a light weekend getaway, as it is close to Seoul while embracing deep mountain ranges and clear waters. Although it is a city of 370,000 residents, stepping just a little outside the downtown area welcomes you with traces of the Joseon Dynasty and lush forests. It is perfect for those who want to escape a bustling routine and enjoy quiet contemplation.
A place where time lingers, imbued with the breath of the Joseon royal court
Gwangju is where the kiln sites that produced white porcelain to be presented to the royal court of the Joseon Dynasty were located. True to its reputation as the cradle of Joseon white porcelain, it is said that digging the ground would reveal white and fine porcelain shards. Even amidst painful histories such as the Japanese Invasions of Korea and the Qing Invasion of Joseon, the traces of building mountain fortresses and gathering hearts to protect the country remain intact throughout Namhansanseong Fortress. Rather than dry stories from a history textbook, it feels much more approachable as traces of ancient people encountered while walking like a stroll.
Spots that evoke admiration wherever your steps land
Gwangju has truly many places worth visiting, ranging from sacred sites great for emptying your mind while walking along lush forest paths to historical sites steeped in royal history. I have selected only the places I walked through and enjoyed myself, so please use this as a reference for this weekend's course.

Nature embraced by green forests and calm lakes
Gwangju's nature is truly beautiful as it changes clothes every season. In spring, yellowish-green new shoots, in summer, lush green shades, and in autumn, red-dyed foliage make your footsteps stop. In particular, Cheongnyangsan Mountain, which embraces Namhansanseong Fortress, and the surroundings of Paldangho Lake, which moistens the city, are also renowned as driving courses.
Namhansan Mountain (남한산)
A mountain embracing the UNESCO World Heritage Namhansanseong Fortress, where trekking along the gentle fortress wall path is especially popular.

The taste and flair of Gwangju enjoyed healthily and heartily
When you come to Gwangju, you somehow feel like you should eat healthy natural food. Restaurants selling braised chicken with soup (dakbaeksuk) or native chicken dishes, and wild vegetable bibimbap are lined up mainly around Namhansanseong Fortress. Filling your stomach heartily with well-simmered spicy chicken stew (dakbokke탕) or savory soybean paste stew, and having a cup of coffee at a cafe overlooking Paldangho Lake or forest views will melt away the fatigue of travel.

Useful travel tips for Gwangju you should know
Gwangju is accessible from Seoul and the metropolitan area by bus or subway (Gyeonggang Line), but natural attractions like Namhansanseong Fortress or Cheonjinam may have somewhat sparse dispatch intervals, so using your own vehicle or renting a car is recommended. In particular, weekend Namhansanseong roads can experience traffic jams, so starting a bit early is a good trick.
